Accessible embeds
While SiteNow offers many ways of constructing content for your users, you may find that you need to embed fragments of content or functionality that are not available on the platform. Embeddable objects (or just embeds) are often times web apps, but could also include charts, graphs, and other visuals provided by a third party.
Please be aware that you are responsible for your embed being compliant with WCAG 2.1 AA accessibility standards. While we are responsible for ensuring the accessibility compliance of SiteNow, we cannot control or be responsible for the accessibility of embedded external content.
Tools
To get you started testing your embed for accessibility compliance, we have compiled a list of tools you can use to scan your embed. None of these tools are perfect and will sometimes miss things, which is why we recommend using more than one.
For many of the tools listed below, see the Accessibility tools page of the Accessibility at Iowa website.
Siteimprove accessibility extension
The Siteimprove accessibility extension is a Chrome only extension that allows you to scan the embed with your browser.
After downloading the extension, navigate to the page where your embed is and activate the extension by clicking on it in your toolbar.
WAVE browser extension
The WAVE browser tools can be used either on their site or through an extension.
To use it on their site, input the URL of whatever you would like to embed and it will load a page flagging all potential issues for you.
Alternatively, you can find more information on how to use their browser extension for your specific browser on their site.
ANDI accessibility bookmarklet
The ANDI (Accessible Name & Description Inspector) bookmarklet is an in browser toolbar that works with most browsers. It is primarily helpful for focusable elements.
Follow the instructions on their site to install, and then whenever you would like to use it to check for accessibility issues click on it as if you were clicking on a bookmark in your bookmarks bar.
Lighthouse
Lighthouse is a Chrome-only tool that can run accessibility reports on individual web apps. To use it, navigate to the page where your embed is and follow the instructions listed on their introduction page.
You can find an overview for Lighthouse here, with instructions on installation and usage.
Contacting accessibility services
No accessibility tool is perfect, and it is never a replacement for user testing. With this in mind, please request a review of your embed from accessibility services, or by emailing ITAccessibility@uiowa.edu.
