Managing menus
Main navigation
Menus are the primary way users navigate your SiteNow website. While the system is flexible, there are specific "best practices" to ensure your breadcrumbs and active menu indicators work correctly.
Available menus
- Main Menu: The primary navigation at the top of your website and used for in-page navigation.
- Top Links: Reserved for up to two high-priority links.
- Footer Menus: Primary, Secondary, and Tertiary columns at the bottom of the page. Only the first level of links will display here.
- Social Media: Specifically designed for icon-based links to your social media accounts.
How to add content to a menu
Method A: Content edit form (Recommended)
For page content, manage the menu placement directly on the page you are editing. Article and person content don't typically live in menus.
- Open the Menu Settings in the right-hand "Advanced" sidebar.
- Check Provide a menu link.
- Parent Item: Select where this page lives.
Method B: Menu overview page
Use this for external links, "No-Link" headers or other content in your website. Go to Structure > Menus > Main Navigation.
- External Links: Use the Add Link button for websites outside of your own.
- No-Link Headers: To create a dropdown parent that isn't a clickable page, enter
<nolink>in the Link field. - Autocomplete (Internal References): There are other pieces of content within the website (e.g. Webform) that don't provide menu settings when editing the content (Method A). In those cases, search for the page title in the Link field and select the result from the dropdown.
Menu item options
Once a link is created, click Edit next to the item in the Menu Overview to see these options:
- Show as Expanded: Required if you want child pages to appear in a dropdown menu.
- Enabled: Uncheck this to hide a link without deleting it.
- Icon Picker: Available only in the Social Media menu to select brand icons.
- Link attributes:
- See Conversion tracking for more information.
Troubleshooting
Duplicate link conflicts
SiteNow uses the "last saved" menu position to determine breadcrumbs. If a page lives in two places, the breadcrumbs and "active" menu highlights may appear on the wrong section of the site. Restructure your menu system so that content resides in the menu once and use call to actions and in-page links to create auxiliary relationships to the content.
False child menu indicators
Using absolute or relative links to unpublished content can cause inaccurate menu indicators/dropdowns. Because the link doesn't have a formal relationship to the content, SiteNow is unaware of the published status of the content when generating the menu. Using Method A above or Autocomplete (Internal References) should ensure the state of the content is known by the menu.
Dropdown menus not showing
If your sub-pages aren't appearing in the main navigation:
- Ensure the Parent Menu Item has "Show as Expanded" checked.
- Ensure the Child Menu Items are "Enabled" and published.
