Responsive design version of diversity site

Diversity

The Chief Diversity Office was interested in combining multiple organizations that support diversity and enrichment at the University of Iowa under an umbrella site with a common look and feel across all of the sites. Compliance with section 508 and WCAG 2.0 guidelines to achieve maximum accessibility and usability was paramount.
Problem:
Multiple units support diversity efforts on campus and each site had a separate URL, look and feel. The Office for Diversity wanted to combine the units, design, events and news but still give them autonomy to serve the populations they support. In addition, achieving a high accessibility and usability score was very important.
Solution:
Working with the Web Accessibility Coordinator, a new and clean design was created and implemented that allowed the site to reach a score in the upper 90% range on WCAG 2.0 guidelines.

The addition of a common calendar with a tagging system for individual events allowed the many units to identify events that would be of interest to their visitors.

A feed from University Communication and Marketing's IowaNow service with news articles tagged with Diversity allows a fresh feed of news to display to visitors with no intervention by Diversity Office staff.
